Kenji Yoshikawa – Permafrost

STEP students, under the direction of UAF Associate Professor Kenji Yoshikawa, investigate the Permafrost Tunnel, a site created by the U.S. Corps of Engineers to research permafrost. The tunnel travels underground approximately ten meters and shows firsthand frozen soil layers and deposits dating as far back as 40000 years ago. Shown here is a fossilized bison bone from 14,000 years ago.
